Sharing a Syllabus Publicly on CTools

Description
OPTION 1: Use the Syllabus Tool to upload your syllabus
OPTION 2: Upload your syllabus to your "My Workspace" resources area

Description

The Syllabus tool was designed as a way for instructors to create an HTML version of their syllabus for site participants.

Unfortunately, CTools does not currently have a public portal or search function that allows students to easily find your syllabus if they are not enrolled in your class.

The only comprehensive list of CTools official course sites that is available to unenrolled students is the Sites listing on the CTools Gateway (the page that opens when you first go to ctools.umich.edu, before you log into CTools).  Your CTools site description is linked to your site's listing. Your site description is the only official information available to students about your course.   You may choose to copy and paste your entire syllabus into your site description.  Please note, however, that the description field is a simple text field and any text formatting will be lost.

In order to share a formatted syllabus with prospective students, you will need to upload your syllabus and then copy and paste the URL of the syllabus into your site description.

There are two ways to do this:

- Use the Syllabus Tool to upload your syllabus

- Upload your syllabus to your "My Workspace" resources area

(See detailed instructions below.)

OPTION 1: Use the Syllabus Tool to upload your syllabus

Part 1. Upload your syllabus file

1. Log in to CTools and open your course site. Click Syllabus in the left-hand menu bar.

(If you do not have the Syllabus tool available in your CTools site, you must add it to your site. See the "Adding and Removing Tool" part of the Site Info section -- under Using the Tools -- in the online help for instructions.)

2. Click the Create/Edit link at the top of the window. Click Add. Type in a title (e.g., Fall 06 Syllabus)

3. Click Add Attachments at the bottom of the screen. Click the Browse… or Choose File button (depending on your internet browser). Locate your syllabus file on your computer and click Open.

4. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and click Continue.

5. Click the radio button next to Public View. Click Post.

Part 2. Find the URL of your syllabus

6. Click Preview along the top of the window.

7 . Right-click (control + click on the Mac) over the attachment link and select the Copy Link Location or Copy Shortcut option.

Part 3. Paste the URL into your site description

8. Click Site Info on the left-hand menu bar. Click the Edit Site Information link along the top of the window.

9. Click inside the Description box and scroll down to the bottom of any existing text. Click your Internet browser's Paste command.

10. Click Continue at the bottom of the page. Click Finish to save your changes.

Your updated site description will appear in the CTools Gateway's Sites list after 24 hours.
